Dr Fiona Cowan

Consultant Gynaecologist
Qualifications: MBBS BSc (Hons) MRCOG MIPM

Dr Fiona Cowan is a Consultant Gynaecologist at University Hospital Southampton (UHS), appointed in 2019. She graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’s Medical School, University of London in 2009 where she was awarded a Distinction in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and was the President of the King’s College London Surgical Society for which she was awarded the King’s Gold Crown Award.

Dr Cowan is Lead for the Psychosexual Medicine service at UHS and is a rarity nationally and internationally in that she holds both Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) and Membership of the Institute of Psychosexual Medicine (MIPM). Dr Cowan established the first UHS Acute Gynaecology Clinic. She has regular UHS clinics in advanced gynaecological ultrasound including the detection of endometriosis, adnexal masses and other gynaecological conditions. She also runs busy ambulatory/outpatient and rapid access gynaecology clinics enabling women to have a ‘one stop’ service to see and treat their gynaecological conditions.

Dr Cowan is an Educational and Clinical Supervisor with a passion for teaching undergraduates and postgraduates. She has been Lead Clinician for the Southampton University Year 4 Medical Students and previously established the Health Education Kent, Surrey and Sussex Obstetrics and Gynaecology Trainee Mentoring Scheme which has now been adopted in other regions nationally.

Dr Cowan has lectured Nationally and Internationally on Psychosexual Medicine, Ambulatory Gynaecology, Gynaecological Ultrasound and Medical Education. Dr Cowan has several peer review publications. She previously won the RCOG World Congress prize for Medical Education.

Dr Cowan prides herself on being a compassionate, holistic, friendly and highly skilled clinician who has been known to build a great rapport with her patients, putting them at ease.
