Prof Vassilis G Hadjianastassiou

Consultant General, Vascular & Transplant Surgeon
Qualifications: DM(Oxon), BMBCh(Oxon), FRCS(Gen Surg), FEBS (Vascular) FEBS (Transplant)

Professor Vassilis Hadjianastassiou graduated from the Medical School at the University of Oxford where he also completed his doctoral thesis in abdominal aortic aneurysms. He holds dual GMC accreditation in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, having completed his specialist surgical training at the Oxford and London Deaneries.

Professor Vassilis was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ NHS Hospitals in 2008 where he also served as the Clinical Lead for pancreas transplantation. In 2011 he was recruited by the Cyprus Ministry of Health to restructure the system of Organ Transplantation in Cyprus and became the founding Medical Director of Transplantation there. He also served for two years as one of the two appointed experts in Vascular Surgery on the Government’s Advisory Committee. Among the innovations he introduced there are: the first Carotid Endarterectomy under local anaesthesia, the first pancreatic organ transplant, the first Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy, the first Blood Group Incompatible Kidney Transplant and the first Fenestrated EVAR for complex abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. He currently works at the Royal London Hospital as a full-time Consultant Surgeon.

Vascular Surgery: Varicose Vein Laser ablation, Spider Veins, Carotid Stenosis Surgery, Carotid Body tumour, Diabetic Foot, Abdominal Aortic, Iliac and Popliteal Aneurysms, Peripheral Bypass Surgery for claudication or critical ischaemia

Laparoscopic (Key hole): hernia repairs, cholecystectomy, adrenalectomy, appendicectomy, nephrectomy

Renal (Kidney) Failure: peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion (open and laparoscopic), simple and complex arterio-venous fistulas and grafts
